‘Struggling For Breathing Space’ – Shahid Kapoor on being a father

Shahid Kapoor is a stellar actor. Back when he broke on the screen in some pop videos, he has only grown from strength to strength from there. On the way he has also picked several awards for his work and the character he has portrayed.

But there was one role Shahid was not ready. After his marriage to Mira Rajput in 2015, he was blessed with daughter Misha and baby son Zain, that is when the unthinkable happened. In his words

“I was pretty self-oriented till I became a parent. Though I believed I was selfless. But when I became a parent, I realised I was actually damn selfish. Now I don’t put myself first. You end up thinking about your kids and family first. Sometimes it’s nice. Sometimes it’s frustrating because you do need to put yourself first at times. Every individual needs to have their own breathing space. I struggle with it. I respect my parents a lot more today than I did before I was a parent. Now I understand what all they did for me. I don’t know if it’s too late for me to apologise but through Filmfare I say, ‘Mom and dad, sorry for all those times I was a prick’.”

It can be noted that after being a father to Misha Kapoor and Zain Kapoor, he has realised how much his parents Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem have done for him.

Earlier, in an interview with PTI, Shahid Kapoor mentioned

“Fatherhood has brought a lot of change in me as a person and as a human being. My priorities have changed. I am less self-oriented now because I believe actors can never be not self-oriented. I think I am more open to different point of views. I have matured and feel a lot more grown up now,”

In another interview with HT he states about fatherhood:

It’s like a wild horse that used to be free in the wild. But for four years, he has been domesticated. So, my self-image has completely changed. I’m a domesticated horse now (laughs).”

When Mira Rajput was pregnant with their first child, Shahid Kapoor was obsessive about being a father. In fact he went ahead and started engaging with pregnancy related applications which would give weekly updates about the baby. He further quoted:

The amazing thing is that mera bachcha ayega na toh main usko bataunga ki aise karna hai, waise karna hai. I have already started feeling it’s the other way round. Before the baby has come, you feel you need to adjust to being a father. So the parents change more and the child is going to be what it is going to be. “

When Shahid Kapoor comes home to wife Mira Rajput, Misha Kapoor and Zain Kapoor, he says :

“I don’t want to leave. I guess a man who is a father will understand. It can’t be defined. It gives you a lot of strength. I feel strong, because I want to fight for Misha and be my best for her. I want to be better every day, because I want her to be proud of me.”

The above picture exhibits the resemblance between the father and son when they were about the same age. Shahid even had an apt caption asking his followers to spot the difference. Some of the comments on the picture included ” Xerox Copy ” or ” Just the colour makes it different”.

When the couple’s second child Zain Kapoor was born, fans speculated on the expected name. Later Shahid revealed that Shahid’s wife Mira Rajput named the kid Zain Kapoor while she was pregnant.

Its safe to assume that father Shahid Kapoor has a deep bond with daughter Misha Kapoor. Shahid has confessed to be an emotional father and has also stated that:

“I’m an extremely emotional dad. I can’t control my emotions when it comes to Misha, my daughter, and I know that’s going to be a problem in the coming years because I’m not going to be able to be very logical or practical about her,” says the doting father.”
